Casting Call for Staged Reading of American Hwangap

Seeking AAPI actors for a powerful staged reading exploring family, return, and reconciliation.

Contemporary Asian Theater Scene (CATS) is seeking high school, college, and recent graduates for a unique Staged Reading of American Hwangap by Lloyd Suh.

This project will culminate in two public performances at a site-specific venue, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 20–21, 2025. Rehearsals, including tech and dress, will take place during the week of June 16, with additional dates scheduled in May. A stipend will be provided for participation.

About American Hwangap

American Hwangap tells the story of Min Suk Chun, who, 15 years after leaving his family in a Texas suburb, returns to the U.S. from Korea to mark his 60th birthday—hwangap, a milestone in the Eastern Zodiac that signifies rebirth. As he reunites with his ex-wife and now-grown children, the family confronts a fractured past, simmering tensions, and the often frustrating presence of a verbose and unpredictable patriarch now back at the head of the table.

Characters

  • MIN SUK CHUN – 59, a Korean immigrant to the U.S., returned to Korea, and is now back again. Probably either tall, large, or otherwise imposing. His English is actually quite good though rusty; it comes and goes, but he speaks quickly, often, and confidently—even when he doesn’t have the words.

  • MARY CHUN – 58, his ex-wife. Reinvented. A modern Asian-American woman. Speaks proficient English, though it may be tinged with only a very slight accent.

  • RALPH CHUN – 29, their youngest son. Brilliant, damaged. Lives in his mother’s basement.

  • ESTHER CHUN – 31, their daughter. Twice divorced, a perpetual student. Unsettled.

  • DAVID CHUN – 34, their eldest son. An investment banker. Away.
