Program and Marketing Operations Intern Overview

The Program and Marketing Operations Intern supports the planning, logistics, communications, and day-to-day operations behind CATS programs and events. This role is ideal for a student who is curious about how arts organizations actually run, who enjoys both creative work and organizing details. You will work closely with the Executive Director, board members, and volunteers to help shape audience experiences, strengthen our presence at SJSU, and keep our programs running smoothly. You will gain practical skills in arts administration, event production, marketing, and nonprofit operations while contributing to meaningful AAPI-centered storytelling in film and theatre.

Key Responsibilities

1. Program and Event Support

  • Assist with the planning and coordination of CATS annual programs and special events in film, theatre, music, and community arts.

  • Help organize logistics such as schedules, guest lists, and event checklists.

  • Support event prep, including drafting run-of-show documents, scripts, and talking points.

  • Provide day-of-event support, which may include check-in, audience engagement, and basic tech or backstage assistance.

2. Communications, Writing, Content Development & Design

  • Create engaging social media video content for TikTok and Instagram that appeals to high school and college-aged individuals. 

  • Willingness to be on camera is a plus!  

  • Help prepare program materials such as artist bios, film or play descriptions, and moderator notes.

  • Assist with updating website and social media content related to CATS programming.

  • Capture event highlights and key takeaways for recap posts and reports.

  • Design Communications for social media, flyers, video,  etc. using Canva

3. Campus Outreach and Ambassador Work

  • Build awareness of CATS programs at SJSU by sharing opportunities with student clubs, cultural organizations, academic departments, and campus centers.

  • Help identify and connect with potential student partners, collaborators, and audiences.

  • Support tabling, classroom announcements, or informal outreach when appropriate.

  • Provide feedback to CATS on how programming can better reach and serve SJSU students.

4. Operations and Administrative Support

  • Assist with drafting agendas, taking notes, and summarizing action items for meetings.

  • Help maintain organized digital files for events, partners, and communications materials.

  • Support simple tracking of attendance, outreach efforts, and program data as needed.

  • Coordinate with volunteers on small tasks or follow-ups, under guidance from staff.

5. Research and Documentation

  • Conduct background research on artists, playwrights, filmmakers, and themes featured in CATS programming.

  • Help gather and summarize audience feedback and testimonials.

  • Assist with pulling together photos, quotes, and basic metrics for reports and grant materials.

Qualifications

We do not expect you to know everything on day one. Training and guidance will be provided. That said, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Current enrollment at San Jose State University.

  • Interest in at least one of the following: AAPI arts and culture, film, theatre, community engagement, arts administration, or nonprofit work.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Comfort with basic tools such as Google Docs, Canva, and Zoom.

  • Ability to stay organized, manage time, and follow through on assigned tasks.

  • Willingness to ask questions, learn, and offer ideas.

  • Reliability, professionalism, and respect when working with artists, partners, and community members.

Before You Apply, Please Note

  • Eligibility: This internship is open only to currently enrolled San Jose State University students.

  • Schedule and Hours: Part-time contractor, up to 20 hours per week during the semester. We will work around your class schedule, but you must be able to commit consistently.

  • Remote First, With Some On-Site: Most work is remote, with regular Zoom meetings and independent tasks. There will be occasional in-person meetings and events in the South Bay that you are expected to attend when scheduled.

  • Stipend: The internship offers a $3,600 stipend, paid out in several installments over the course of the internship, based on participation and completion of agreed-upon responsibilities.

  • Campus Ambassador Role: A key part of this role is serving as a CATS ambassador at SJSU, connecting with student clubs, departments, and classmates to share CATS events and opportunities in film and theatre.

  • Professional Expectations: You should be comfortable using email, Google Docs, Canva and Zoom, showing up on time, meeting deadlines, and following through on tasks with minimal reminders.

  • Type of Work: This is a hands-on role, not just observation. You will help with real projects in event support, communications, outreach, and operations.
